Party Guest Duties 101 - RSVP Etiquette

RSVP Etiquette

Did you know that as a party guest, you have certain responsibilities to help ensure the event's success?

Planning a party is no small feat. From ordering food and purchasing party supplies to renting tables and chairs, everything hinges on one crucial detail: the expected number of guests.

This is where the invitation and RSVP come into play.

RSVP stands for the French phrase “répondez s'il vous plaît,” or “please respond.” Whether or not you plan to attend, it is proper RSVP etiquette to inform the host of your decision. Promptly responding to an invitation shows respect for the host's time and effort in organizing the event.

It is considered impolite to delay your response while waiting for a potentially better opportunity. Remember, the host has prioritized spending time with you, providing food, and ensuring your enjoyment. You are not obligated to attend, but you should respond as soon as possible to avoid disrupting the party planning process.

Invitations often include an RSVP deadline, which should be respected. Guests should reply as soon as possible to give the host ample time to prepare, and definitely by the specified date. If no deadline is provided, aim to reply at least one week before the event.

If the host does not specify a preferred method for RSVPing, respond in the same manner you received the invite—text for a text invite, a phone call for a call, etc.

This is the first post in a series detailing what it takes to be a good party guest. As society becomes more casual, many standards of etiquette are fading due to technology and short attention spans. However, there is more to a party than just providing food, and there is more to being an ideal guest than simply showing up.

If you love being included in the events your friends and family host, stay tuned for more advice on how to be a beloved party guest.
