How Grief, Glitter, and Grit Built a Business You’ve Never Seen Before

I'm a rainbow baby — an unexpected miracle after five miscarriages — and my family has always reminded me of this precious gift. Each birthday and holiday was a grand celebration infused with love. There were themes, balloon bouquets, taco salad bars, and endless bowls of rainbow punch. Celebration wasn’t just an activity; it became my first love language.

The Influence of My Mother
My mom was not just my parent; she was my best friend and my greatest inspiration. She possessed a natural gift for hospitality, a talent she shared with me through the events we organized together. By the age of 12, I had a hand in planning my brother’s wedding. I fell in love with every detail — from the checklists to the chaos that accompanied the final, unforgettable moments.

During my teenage years, we became the unofficial event planners for our family and friends. People often suggested we should consider this as a profession. However, we didn't think we were doing anything remarkable; we simply loved making others feel celebrated.
A Turning Point in Event Planning
Years later, I dreamt up my first Video Scavenger Hunt. It was a wildly creative experience, filled with laughter. Unfortunately, my mom's health had started to decline, making it difficult for her to participate as she once did. When she passed away in 2015, I took a break from event planning.
But grief has a strange way of showing us our paths. A local charity approached me, asking for help in creating a scavenger hunt for their fundraiser. I agreed, and the event was a resounding success. It became an anticipated annual tradition, reminding me that my journey in this field was far from finished.
In 2018, my cousin’s fiancée felt overwhelmed as she planned their wedding from Jacksonville. I stepped in to help. For four months, I traveled to Jacksonville, designing centerpieces, coordinating vendors, and guiding her through challenging decisions. On the wedding day, guests commented on how seamless and personal the whole experience felt. For the first time, I allowed myself to wonder… Could I actually do this professionally?

Pursuing My Passion
Motivated by this experience, I enrolled in the New York Institute of Art & Design. I dedicated myself to completing their Event and Wedding Planning programs. By May 2020, coincidentally when my COVID stimulus check arrived, I graduated with certifications in both.
I decided to launch Weddings & Events by Heather immediately. I wasn’t sure when a new opportunity would arise, so I seized the moment. Starting a business during a pandemic posed many challenges. However, after restrictions lifted, I managed to coordinate some birthday parties and secure my second wedding booking.

Then came the transformative year of 2022. My father's health declined rapidly. Simultaneously, I faced my struggles: a uterine cancer diagnosis, surgery, and several months of recovery — both physically and emotionally. I chose to close my business to focus on what truly mattered: family and healing.

After my father’s passing, my husband and I decided to relocate from Miami to Jacksonville. As we adjusted to our new life, I felt a strong pull back toward event planning. I didn't want to be just another planner. I aimed to create something unique… something that catered to people like me.
A Space for Connection and Fun
I envisioned a space for those who love celebrations but may feel awkward or lost in social settings. This could help people who crave connections but struggle to initiate them. I wanted to design experiences that foster joy and fun, allowing everyone to engage in meaningful ways.
That's when I recalled my Video Scavenger Hunts and how joyfully they brought people together. I conducted research and found that while scavenger hunts existed in the area, no one was offering the kind of interactive, host-led, memory-making experience I could bring to life.
I also noticed the ongoing popularity of murder mystery parties. I wanted a more engaging experience without intricate costumes or awkward roleplay. The goal was to create fast-paced gameplay that promoted real interaction, real laughs, and real connection. This clarity led to the birth of the Sabotage Mystery Party.

On January 1, 2024, I officially launched Events With A Twist. This initiative brings my two signature experiences to life, embodying fun, unexpected joy, and authenticity. It’s crafted for all ages, particularly those who are young at heart.
Since then, we've successfully hosted birthdays, bachelorette parties, holidays, team-building events, and charity fundraisers throughout Jacksonville and beyond. Each event acts as a celebration, highlighting not just my guests but also the remarkable journey that led me here.
💜 Introducing GoLoveYourself: A Celebration with Purpose
This November, I’m thrilled to host the #GoLoveYourself Event— a women’s empowerment brunch and fundraiser supporting Hubbard House, our local certified domestic violence center. This isn’t just another networking event; it’s a heartfelt space for community, healing, and elevating self-worth.
This event carries deep personal significance to me. I understand what it feels like to be invisible. I know how hard it can be to fight for your voice, your dreams, and your safety. When women unite with intention, incredible things happen.
I hope you’ll join me — as a guest, a sponsor, or even a supporter cheering from the sidelines. Together, we can create a supportive environment where our collective voices can rise.
Thank you for being part of my story — and for allowing me to be part of yours.
Let’s keep twisting up the fun,
