The room was beautiful.

The food was great.

The vibe? A little colder than usual.

That’s when I realized — Rebecca Cummings Scales wasn’t there.

If you’ve ever met Rebecca, you already know: she doesn’t just walk into a room — she fills it with light, love, and laughter.

That’s what she brings to the table every single time: warmth, joy, and a presence that makes everyone feel at home. And when I complimented her for her incredible energy and vibe? She was as humble as ever — crediting the loving household she grew up in, and the grandparents who started it all.

Rebecca is proud to have carried that legacy forward in her 17-year marriage to kindred spirit Richard Scales. And you can see it in her eyes when she talks about their children — Scarlet (12) and Jeremiah (8). That same warmth and light lives in them.

Rebecca is the co-owner of Elegance Artistry, the go-to for professional makeup in St. Johns, Florida — and honestly, the name couldn’t be more fitting. Despite her playful spirit and radiant personality, Rebecca exudes timeless elegance, from her flawless makeup to her show stopping wardrobe.

Her makeup journey began at The Ohio State University, where she majored in Vocal Performance and Business. Stage makeup was part of the curriculum, and she quickly realized she had a natural talent for it. From there, she balanced two passions — traveling the country as a professional opera singer while offering makeup services on the side.

Fourteen years ago, she took the leap. Alongside business partner Sara, she launched Elegance Artistry with locations in Philadelphia, Chicago, Roanoke, and St. Augustine.

When I asked what sets her apart from the sea of talented makeup artists, her answer gave me goosebumps:

“My superpower isn’t makeup — it’s people. I don’t sell anything I’m not passionate about, but I’m passionate about people. I love everyone.”

And that’s what stands out most when you meet Rebecca. Her mother once said she had a way of making everyone feel like the most important person in the room — because to Rebecca, they are.

Before she ever picks up a brush or gloss, she takes the time to understand her clients on a deeper level: Who are they? Why are they here? What do they love most about themselves?

That conversation becomes her guide, helping her enhance the features they adore — and the ones she does too. Because to Rebecca, looking good is just the beginning. Feeling good is the real goal.

“We don’t do makeovers. That suggests there’s something wrong that needs to be fixed.”

Her approach is holistic, empowering, and rooted in self-love.

Most recently, Rebecca was featured as both makeup artist and emcee for the We Rise Conference in St. Johns, Florida — glamming up local powerhouse Jac Kalaher while co-hosting alongside Melissa Downey. Their chemistry on stage lit up the room, and we’re all hoping to see more from this dynamic duo soon.

As we wrapped up our chat, Rebecca was gracious enough to share a few go-to beauty tips.

Here's how to look and feel amazing in just 5 minutes:

  • Skincare first: always start with moisturizer and eye cream

  • Sunscreen is non-negotiable — even if you're just running errands

  • If you’re short on time, brows come first — they frame your whole face

  • Choose your top three: for her, it’s brows, lipstick, and mascara

  • Eyeshadow comes last, if there's time to spare

As someone who creates interactive event experiences for teens and adults, I had to ask about her party preferences. Rebecca laughed and admitted she’s a “dude” when it comes to décor, but she loves the simplicity and beauty of flowers. As for what makes or breaks a party? It's the food — always the food. Her go-to? Barbecue for laid-back hangs or finger foods for more polished, networking events.
